چکیده

A reversible photo-driven sensor for aluminum ions based on photochromicspiropyran was reported with rapid response time. The detection of aluminum wasperformed via the chelation of aluminum ions with the merocyanine form (MC) ofphotochromic spiropyran. ¹H NMR studies confirmed the conversation from the MC forminto the Al3+ -MC form. Addition of aluminum ions to the spiropyran (SP) in a MeCN/H₂Omixture results in obvious color changes with a loss in absorbance at 539 nm and anenhancement in absorbance at about 420 nm after irradiation at 365 nm. The metal chelationcomplex (Al3+ -MC) can also be converted into the original SP form by irradiation withvisible light. Aluminum ions can be detected down to 0.5 μM levels in a fast response ofless than 5 seconds with no interference from other ionic species.

Modified mesoporous MCM-41 as hosts for photochromic spirobenzopyrans.

The influence of the chemical composition and silylation of mesoporous MCM-41 materials on the photochromic behaviour of adsorbed spiropyran (BIPS) and 6-nitrospiropyran was studied. Upon incorporation, the spiropyrans underwent ring opening to form either zwitterionic merocyanine or its corresponding O-protonated form. In all silica MCM-41 or in the MCM-41 containing aluminium, the O-protonate...

Thermal isomerization of spiropyran to merocyanine in aqueous media and its application to colorimetric temperature indication.

Thermally-induced isomerization of spiropyran derivatives in aqueous media has been studied. The colorless spirocyclic (SP) forms of spiropyran derivatives are isomerized to colored merocyanine (MC) forms even in dark conditions at elevated temperature. Equilibrium, kinetic, and deuterium experiments reveal that the thermal SP → MC isomerization is due to the stabilization of MC form by a hydro...

Characterization of the Thermal and Photoinduced Reactions of Photochromic Spiropyrans in Aqueous Solution

Six water-soluble spiropyran derivatives have been characterized with respect to the thermal and photoinduced reactions over a broad pH-interval. A comprehensive kinetic model was formulated including the spiro- and the merocyanine isomers, the respective protonated forms, and the hydrolysis products. The experimental studies on the hydrolysis reaction mechanism were supplemented by calculation...

Reversible Low-Light Induced Photoswitching of Crowned Spiropyran-DO3A Complexed with Gadolinium(III) Ions

Photoswitchable spiropyran has been conjugated to the crowned ring system DO3A, which improves its solubility in dipolar and polar media and stabilizes the merocyanine isomer. Adding the lanthanide ion gadolinium(III) to the macrocyclic ring system leads to a photoresponsive magnetic resonance imaging contrast agent that displays an increased spin-lattice relaxation time (T₁) upon visible light...

Ultrafast Studies of Photochromic Spiropyrans in Solution

The photochromic reaction dynamics of the spiropyran molecule 1’,3’,3’-trimethyl-6-hydroxyspiro[2H1 -benzopyran-2,2’-indoline] (HBPS) in solution have been studied with picosecond and femtosecond transient electronic absorption spectroscopy. Following excitation near 300 nm, the C-0 bond of the molecule breaks in less than 100 fs to form a metastable species. A small fraction of this metastable...
